Moravian Book Shop
The Moravian Book Shop is the oldest continuously running bookstore in the world. Established in 1745 on the south side of the Lehigh River, the Moravian Book Shop resided in several locations before moving to its current site in the heart of historic downtown Bethlehem in 1871. Situated on Main Street across from Historic Hotel Bethlehem and just a few doors from Central Moravian Church, the Moravian Book Shop is also home to the Moravian College student book store. In 2018, the Moravian Church Northern Province approached the college asking if they would take over ownership of the Book Shop and the college agreed it was the best way to keep the store open and in the “Moravian family.”
The Book Shop continues to offer its iconic book section that features indie best sellers, trade books, and select books highlighting the history of Moravians, Bethlehem, Bethlehem Steel, Lehigh Valley, and Pennsylvania. In addition, the Moravian Book Shop sells and buys back student textbooks. The Book Shop also stocks Moravian College apparel and gift items, reference books, stationery and art supplies, greeting cards, candy, and health and beauty aids. The inventory also includes traditional Moravian and Bethlehem-themed gifts and College faculty and alumni-authored books.
The Christmas department remains a regular destination for visitors and residents alike. Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or wanting to enjoy some time just browsing, you are sure to discover something new each time you visit the Moravian Book Shop.
Insider’s Tip: The Book Shop regularly holds events for local and nationally-known authors and in the future will feature more space for music and other performing arts.
