Overview
A Christmas Putz from the Moravian Historical Society's historic collection will be on display at the Moravian Historical Society Museum beginning November 29 from 1-4 p.m.
Building a putz is a Moravian tradition that reaches back to the mid-18th century. A putz is an elaborate miniature display that tells the Christmas story. The putz is made up of hundreds of small figures and can be elaborate or simple. Today, an increasing number of Moravian congregations have adopted the practice of a “community putz” where families and groups cooperate to build a putz in a public building rather than in individual homes.
Visitors are invited to view the annual putz display in the historic 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest Moravian structure in North America. An elaborate miniature display that tells the Christmas story, the Moravian putz tradition reaches back into the eighteenth century. This exhibition features objects from the 1850s Morris putz and the 20th-century Sullivan putz, accompanied by lights and narration of the Nativity story. Also, enjoy a festive display of Moravian stars from the collection of the Moravian Historical Society.
The exhibition will be open daily through January 4, 2026. The Moravian Historical Society will be closed on December 24, 25, 26, and 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
