South Bethlehem Historical Society
Overview
The South Bethlehem Historical Society (SBHS) is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Bethlehem’s “Second Chapter” — the period beginning around 1850, when the city emerged as a major industrial powerhouse. By highlighting the people, diverse ethnic communities, and iconic landmarks of South Bethlehem, SBHS brings the stories behind this transformative era to life.
Visitors can explore this history through a variety of engaging experiences, including self-guided walking tours and the “Steeples and Steel” tour, presented in partnership with the Steelworkers’ Archives. SBHS also collaborates with the National Museum of Industrial History, participating in exhibits during its annual Iron and Steel Weekend.
In addition, SBHS hosts the beloved Annual Ethnic Tree Display, a vibrant celebration of the cultural traditions and heritage of the many communities that shaped South Bethlehem.
