A message from Bee Coordinator, Jennifer Kelly:
Dear Regional Finalists,
After a considerable amount of contemplation, I have made the very difficult decision to cancel the 5th Annual Discover Lehigh Valley Regional Spelling Bee for the 2020 season. The competition scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 at 6:30 pm at Northampton Community College’s Lipkin Theatre will NOT take place.
I feel strongly that this decision reflects both a social and moral responsibility to our children and all members of our community, and certainly coincides with national recommendations of social distancing aimed at controlling spread of the coronavirus.
I understand that this decision is disappointing for all of you who have worked diligently over the course of the past year to prepare for this final level of competition.
In an effort to be fair and consistent with bee standards, I have decided to award the 2020 Discover Lehigh Valley Spelling Bee Regional Champion title to the speller who scored highest at the most recent round of competition- the preliminary written round.
Haleigh Mensinger, an 8th grader from Drums Elementary/Middle School in Drums, Pennsylvania (Luzerne County) will represent the region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland at the end of May. Congratulations to Haleigh.
Once again, I know and understand the disappointment that this announcement will evoke, but during these strange, uncharted, and trying times, I feel that this is the decision which makes the best sense.
Best of luck to all of you in all of your future endeavors. Keep spelling!
