Who is Muhammad?
Today, very few subjects are as controversial as the religion brought by the Prophet Muhammad. Modern media is full of images of fear and controversies on Islam and related subjects such as jihad, Shari’a law, Islam and women, etc. but how accurate are these sources and how should we feel about Islam in our modern American context? The most effective way to get to the answers and to overcome fear is to have access the factual and real knowledge.
Some of the topics that we will tackle are as following:
• Socio-historical context of pre-Islamic Arabia
• The concept of prophethood in Islam
• The life story of Prophet Muhammad
• The Prophet’s family life and his marriages
• The role of women in Islam
• War and peace in Islam
• Fundamental sources of Islamic knowledge and lifestyle: The Quran and Hadith
We hope that you will join us for this 7 week program that will explore the conceptual framework and the history of the early years of Islam and the life of the Prophet of Islam. Then at the conclusion, enjoy a family dinner with a Muslim family and see Islamic home life for yourself.
These classes will be taught by Dr. Zuleyha Çolak of Columbia University and Professor Halim Calis of Respect Graduate School. This is a non-credit program open to everyone. Continuing Education Credits are available.
