I first found out about this quaint eatery on the corner of Union and 7th in West Bethlehem last fall while I was on Twitter for work (LehighValleyPA). I noticed BlackForestDeli promoting all these delicious-sounding specials, particularly their homemade cream of potato soup (which turned out to be amazing, by the way). I asked a friend of mine about it, since he's a two-time Black Forest Deli eat-off winner, and he raved about it, so I made my way to Black Forest Deli and wasn't disappointed.
Very much a corner deli with seating for half-a-dozen customers, Black Forest Deli is a huge hit with local business folk - a slew of people came in to pick up a pre-order or just took their food to go while we were there. The table Kim and I sat at had a checkerboard top, so while we waited for our food (made fresh by the very friendly mother/daughter duo who run the place), we played checkers.
I ordered an Italian hoagie, which was very good and came with a side of macaroni salad at no additional charge. I'm such a picky eater, I usually wouldn't touch macaroni salad, but I tried it anyhow. With its diced celery and carrots, mayo and a hint of pepper, I LOVED IT!
Even though Kim beat me in checkers, it was probably the most enjoyable and affordable lunch I've had in a long time, with a subtle breeze coming in from the open door and a total price tag of $14 for both of us. We left full (Kim could only eat half of her panini since she also had an entire bowl of homemade soup) and in a positive state of mind for the rest of the work day.
Have you ever been to Black Forest Deli? Have you tried their halupkis yet?
