You may have noticed that Lehigh Valley becomes a mecca for music fans for 10 rockin’ days each August, ever since Musikfest first took place in 1984. Steve Miller Band was nothing short of phenomenal at Musikfest on Monday night. The acoustics of the Sands Steel Stage were incredible; I’ve never heard a concert at an outdoor venue sound so clear.
It’s been a dream of mine to see Steve Miller Band perform for quite a while now. I’ve spent the last 10 or so years awkwardly “dancing” to their music, ever since I first heard my mom play them on the stereo when I was a teenager. So it was only fitting that she come to the concert with me this past Monday night to see one of our favorite bands.
The band played most of their classics, including “The Joker”, “Abracadabra”, and “Fly like an Eagle”. Steve even played a song with his Martin-made Steve Miller Signature Model guitar, and gave a shout-out to the Nazareth guitar maker.
To our left in the audience was a little girl who couldn’t have been much older than 5 or 6. As soon as a song would start (sometimes before I recognized which song it was), she’d get excited and tell her mom that she “loves this song”. Sure enough, she knew pretty much every word to every song they played. Prior to this phenomenon, I feared the musical taste of her generation might be hopeless, but that little girl restored my faith in my generation’s successors.
The whole experience was awesome. The festival food, the street performers and the feel-good atmosphere make Musikfest an event worth remembering. So here I am, to tell you to “reach out and grab” this one-of-a-kind festival, right here in Lehigh Valley.
PS – There are only 5 days left until the Musikfest hibernates until next August. So get out there, put on your dancing shoes and have a blast. Be sure to let us know what you think!
