What do Dave, Jeff, Brian and Phil have in common? They would be the only four past champions to make it to the quarterfinals of the 75th Lehigh Valley Amateur Golf Tournament at Green Pond Country Club.
For those that qualified to play in Lehigh Valley’s biggest tournament, the excitement started on Thursday, September 22 and finished with three matches being played to determine the Championship Flight winner on Sunday the 25th. That’s a lot of golf my friends! And, some awesome golf it was.
I happened to be cheering for the oldest in the flight, recent Lehigh Valley Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Dave Blichar, 48, and member of Blue Ridge Country Club. It would have been great for an "elder" to take down the “young” kids who can hit the ball a mile, but that didn’t happen for Dave this year. He had three great matches leading up to Sunday, but the wheels fell off a bit at that point, and he was eliminated after his first match of the day. So, here’s to next year “kid!”
Besides the golf at the LV AM, I always enjoy meeting new people. Just following the matches leads you to meet up with people who are “whispering” about who’s winning what matches and where they stand. I think it is a great environment for getting kids interested in golf too. And, did you know that for $15 you can enjoy all the privileges of the tent? That means all the food and drink you can eat for the day … what a bargain!
As for my favorite hole? Well, I would have to say that being a spectator it has to be number nine. There is stadium-style seating set up so you get the best view possible of the green. And, it’s close to the tent which is a bonus.
A big congratulations goes out to Green Pond for having the course in excellent condition following torrential rains on Friday. I have played other local courses lately and they are in no way, shape or form in the condition this course was in.
Kudos to all the winners: Championship – B. Johnson Presidential – E. Marone Juniors – K. Wambold Senior Championship – D. Carr Senior Flights – P. Nardella Super Seniors – B. Butz Legendary: Championship – L. Shallcross 1st Flight – B. Mertz
Did you make it out to the LV AM? What and who is favorite part?
