There has been a growing movement towards general food awareness and caring about where it’s coming from, and it’s been getting more attention in the past few years.

Do you ever get frustrated when you buy “fresh” fruits and vegetables in the store, only to see them go bad within a few days? Many people don’t realize that some of the produce they buy can take weeks to even make it to the store. According to Buy Fresh Buy Local Greater Lehigh Valley, supermarket food travels on average 1,500 miles from farm to table.

As I become more aware of the economic impact of buying locally, I make an effort to do so as much as my budget allows. With all the farmers markets around and it being the peak of harvest season, now is a great opportunity to find what you’ve been missing right here in Lehigh Valley. So the next time you have to go food shopping, consider heading to your local farmers market, butcher or baker. You’ll appreciate it just as much as they will.

Aside from improved taste, there are plenty of other benefits to buy local. You have the chance to support family farms, i.e. your neighbors, instead of the big guys. You can also do your part to help the environment when you cut down on the energy it takes to process the food, transport the food and eventually store the food. Your body receives more nutrients the sooner you eat the food from when it is harvested. Last but certainly not least, buying from within your area improves your local economy!

When you dine out you can make a difference too. Seek out restaurants that practice sustainability and environmental responsibility. They’re popping up all over the place, and it feels great knowing where your food comes from.
