Saturday evening my wife and I went to the opening reception for the "Monet to Matisse" exhibit at the Allentown Art Museum. I was very excited about seeing the exhibit because I am a HUGE fan of the Impressionists.

The exhibit came about as a result of a trade between the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN and the Lehigh Valley museum: 30 Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings from Dixon in return for 29 Renaissance and Baroque works from here. Judging from the more than a thousand people who descended upon the museum for the opening reception Saturday night, the trade appears to be a success.

I was thrilled to see work by so many of my favorites, including Renoir, Monet, Matisse, Braque, Chagall and Seurat. The quality of these works is amazing and are well worth a visit to the museum. My absolute favorite was a small Seurat that looked like a study for his famous painting (think Sunday afternoon).

The food at the event was exceptional; once again, Karen Hunter Catering did an excellent job.

Will you pay a visit to the visiting impressionists?
