You may recall, from previous posts here on Lehigh Valley InSite, that I'll go out to lunch at the drop of a hat and that I like to support local non-profit organizations. Yesterday, those two themes collided.

Along with countless other Lehigh Valley residents, I had already made a donation to the Red Cross for the Haitian relief effort. Although it wasn't much in the scheme of things, at least I did something. Then, yesterday, I read on Facebook that Courtney Quain (my new hero) from Porter's Pub in Easton was donating all her tips for the day to the American Red Cross. Better yet, the Porter brothers were going to match her tips from 1pm to 6pm. That's reason enough to abandon another packed lunch!

I tend to eat "linner"(something between lunch and dinner) so I got to the restaurant mid-afternoon when the normal lunch crowd was back at work. Dining alone, I sat at the bar where you can always count on interaction with other patrons and employees. I met some really interesting people yesterday, including Courtney.

The menu was full of selections I wanted to try but I decided on the fiesta salad with tuna, which is described on the Porter's Pub menu as "mixed greens topped with black beans, feta cheese, grilled artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, cucumber and red onions with ginger vinaigrette on the side". Simply was fabulous!

I didn't ask Courtney how much money she had collected so far, but she did hint that she wished every day was like that! Before leaving a more-than-usual gratuity, I promised to come back soon on a day when she could actually keep her wages. I'm also looking forward to trying other items on the menu.

So, kudos to Courtney and the Porter's Pub folks for doing more than their fair share for those in need. What other disaster relief efforts are scheduled in Lehigh Valley?
