What's better than a summer camp that kids outdoors having fun? A summer camp that gets kids outdoors having fun while also learning about local history.
That's the aim behind the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor's new, unique summer camp program for the 2015 season. Kids’ Canal Camp will introduce kids to canal life and early industry along the Lehigh River, all without the aid of a computer screen.
Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Director of Education, Dennis Scholl, said the camp is a perfect mix of fun and education.
"We thought the new day camp would be perfect to incorporate a few canal related activities, including a ride on the boat," he said., "as well as getting the kids on bicycles heading to a location we have set up for geocaching."
Scholl said D&L is expanding their educational programs and has received positive feedback on their previous field trips, prompting them to consider a day camp.
Kids' Canal Camp will offer hands-on activities, a canal boat ride, a museum scavenger hunt, bike riding and geocaching on the D&L Trail, and a one-on-one with their boat-pulling mules, Hank and George. Kids’ Canal Camp will be held every Wednesday at the National Canal Museum in Easton, from June 24 through August 19, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Camp cost is $60 per student ($55 for children of D&L members), which covers all activities, use of a trail bike, a healthy lunch, beverages, and a copy of the children’s storybook, Tales of the Towpath, signed at the camp by Scholl. Each student also takes home an iron S-hook they make as an apprentice blacksmith.
Don't wait to enroll your child as camps will be limited to 15 students of ages 8-12 on a first-come, first-served basis.
