As I’ve mentioned in the past, an informal group of downtown Allentown workers get together for happy hour every “First Monday.” March’s gathering was held at Sangria*, conveniently located on the first floor of our office building.

I could tell you about the complimentary hors d’ oeuvres served (which were delicious) or the drink specials (including sangria), but I’d rather talk about the two special invited guests, Ann Elizabeth Schlegel and Adam Motto.

Ann, a local artist in residence at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem, is truly a Lehigh Valley treasure. My appreciation of her work started when I discovered her “Adult Beverage Series.” “Mr. Martini” is a classic, but while shopping at Christkindlmarkt a few years back I bought an autographed “Ms. Cabernet” apron for my sister and a “Ms. Cosmopolitan” one for myself. That whole series of 14 paintings can be purchased as a single collection. To break them up would just be wrong. If I were to open a restaurant, I’d love to have them. Ann is pictured here in front of “Piano” from her more recent “Instrument” series.

Adding to the ambiance of the evening was Adam Motto, a local singer/songwriter. His guitar playing and singing was the perfect background for the occasion. I really enjoyed his performance; including covers of classics, standards, pop, and oldies as well as the fact that his playing did not prevent conversation. I’m sure I’d hire him to perform in my hypothetical restaurant.

Once again, I planned on making a “cameo appearance” at First Monday before heading to the gym, but I stayed too long enjoying the great entertainment and company. Not to worry…there are four other days this week to workout.

If you find yourself without plans on the first Monday of any month, just call us to find out where it will be. The more, the merrier!
