I first heard about Billy's Downtown Diner in Bethlehem a couple years ago, but I'd never been there ... until recently.

I love breakfast food, so when Jamey called one Saturday morning to see if I wanted to meet for breakfast at Billy's, I quickly said yes. We got there around 11 a.m. and immediately saw the line starting to spill out the front door (a regular sight on weekends). Yet, we were seated almost immediately.

Tip #1: It's a small place. Going solo or with just one other person opens up more seating options (counter, little booth, big booth, table) so you don't have to wait as long.

Billy's breakfast menu is filled with a lot of "not your ordinary diner" options to choose from, along with the standards. Jamey's been to Billy's several times before and quickly recommended the berry crunch. I have a MEGA sweet tooth so that sounded right up my alley. The zesti omelette also sounded tasty. But I'm not really adventurous when it comes to food, so I ended up ordering a bacon and cheese omelette ...or at least I tried to. Before the waitress could even ask what kind of toast I wanted, Jamey gave me the most incredulous look that said "you're at Billy's Diner and you're ordering that?!" so I quickly changed my order to the zesti omelette.

Tip #2: The first time you go to Billy's, do NOT order something you can get at any old diner. For the complete Billy's Diner experience, order something special.

Apparently, Billy usually walks around welcoming his guests, but on the day I was there, it was so busy he was running around doing whatever he could to help out. Yet he still had time to exchange a few words in passing to Jamey's "Hey, Billy!"

Tip #3: Say "hi" to Billy. He's a nice guy.

Despite how busy it was, the service was quick. And guess what? My zesti omelette was amazing!I guess it pays to be adventurous ... at least if you're going to Billy's Diner, "Best Breakfast" in Lehigh Valley five years running.
