Saturday night my girlfriend and I went to Godfrey Daniels, one of Lehigh Valley's music venues, to see Dina Hall and Beth Sherby perform. And for the $11 and change it cost to get in, it was worth every penny.

It was my first time at Godfrey Daniels, so I didn’t know what to expect. Once we got there I realized why reservations are suggested - it’s a smaller place but that makes the performances much more intimate. Our table was right up front next to the stage. It is a B.Y.O.B. establishment which makes it even more laid back; it’s like having a glass of wine with friends, listening to your favorite band in a comfortable, homey, atmosphere.

When my girlfriend asked what kind of music it was all I could say was “It’s like that Melissa (Ferrick) or that (Ani) DiFranco girl you like.” I may have been a little off, but I was right about one thing, Dina and Beth's music was right up her alley.

Beth Sherby started out the evening and as soon as I heard her voice it was love at first listen (yes, I just made that up). I absolutely adored the song “Franny,” one of her originals; it was about a relationship gone bad. Good topic or bad, anything she sings could melt my heart.

The same goes for Dina. I love her originals just as much as her covers. "Jolene" is a sad song, but when I hear her voice I can’t help but smile. As for my favorite cover song, it’s a tie between Johnny Cash's “Folsom Prison Blues” and 10,000 Maniacs' “Because the Night.” I love Johnny Cash, but Dina's rendition of “Because the Night” almost blows Johnny out of the water.

Here, have a listen to Dina’s original song “She Can’t Recall”

We’ll be attending many more of Dina’s shows, including her show at Musikfest this summer at Leiderplatz Opening Night, August 6th at 6 p.m.

Have you ever heard Beth Sherby or Dina Hall perform? Or have you ever caught a performance at Godfrey Daniels?
