With St. Patty's Day right around the corner, I found a grand place in Lehigh Valley that will help get you in the Irish mindset: Jack Callaghan's Ale House in Allentown.

Last week, my girlfriend Jeanne and I went to Callaghan's for happy hour. I haven't been in the place for over 10 years so I had no idea what to expect since it changed names and all. I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely atmosphere of Kelly green walls, comfortable seating areas and an open kitchen environment. I must say that our bartender, Dale, was very friendly too.

While we were there, we had some dinner - the English fish & chips (although we substituted our "chips" for bay fries) and the spinach dip served with toast points and tortilla chips - which I thought was good and well priced.

One thing we really thought was fun was Jack Callaghan's mug club. Hanging all around the bar are pewter mugs with numbers on them. To get a mug, all you have to do is drink 50 beers (not in one sitting, of course). It turns out they have 21 beers on tap and 39 different bottled beers to choose from. So, what were some of our favorite named beers?

Draft: Franziskaner (some call it Frankenstein), Weyerbacher's Fireside Ale and Jack Callaghan's Ale (brewed by Stouts)

Bottles: Left Hand's Sawtooth Ale, Abita's Turbodog and Purple Haze, and Troegs' Dead Reckoning Porter (brewed in Harrisburg)

There are actually 742 people enrolled in the mug club (make that 743 because Jeanne joined while we were there). Too bad I'm not a beer drinker!

I think we will go back, probably on a Friday night from 3 - 6 p.m. since it is teacher appreciation happy hour and Jeanne is a teacher.

Where will you get your "Irish on" this St. Patty's Day?
