Blue Mountain Ski Area of Lehigh Valley
Video released on: March 8, 2012
Tracey Werner: Welcome to Lehigh Valley visions. It’s winter, and we’re heading outside to see what happens when you combine snow, gravity and adrenaline at Blue Mountain Ski Area in Palmerton. Morning is that magical time of day when the sun is rising and the trails are being groomed for a new batch of skiers and snowboarders. The snow is perfect.
Female Speaker: I am so glad we got up early, you know. I can finally do the first tracks here.
Tracey Werner: Blue Mountain boasts the highest vertical drop in all of Pennsylvania. At 1082 feet with 39 trails designed for every level of skier on over 160 skiable acres. With names like Razor’s Edge, Challenge and Nightmare, I think it’s easy to figure out which ones the experts should tackle. With 13 lifts including the only detachable high speed six pack lift in the area, you will spend more time on the slopes and less time waiting in line. Blue’s five terrain parks feature a combination of rails, boxes, jibs and jumps plus bank turns and rollers for your sick moves. It’s also the only ski resort in the region to feature a big air bag that snow boarders and skiers can use while they learn to execute a new aerial maneuver.
You’ve got to walk before you can learn to run, and here’s where you learn that, well, to ski, that is. At the Summit Learning Center, start with a private or semi private lesson that uses three stations to teach you how to turn and stop. There are explorer and pioneer classes for the kids, classes for seniors and women, and also specialty classes for advanced skiers and snowboarders. You can rent all of the skiing or snowboarding equipment you’ll need in the Summit Rental Shop at the top of the mountain, or at the Valley Rental Shop at the base, that is until you’re ready to buy your own in the True Blue Mountain Sports Store, which sells all of the major brands or gear, outerwear and accessories.
I’m not much of a skier, so snow tubing is much more my speed. Blue Mountain’s 21 lightening speed tubing runs are fast and furious. You can tackle them on your own tube or take a bigger tube with family or friends. Blue Mountain has the only East Coast natural U.S.A. luge track open to the public. It’s an official training site for the U.S.A. luge team. Feel the excitement and rush of adrenaline as you speed along a 2000 foot run and reach speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour. No wonder it’s called the fastest sport on ice.
When it’s time to take a break and refuel, spot in at the Summit Lodge for pub food, live music and a cold one. Want to grab some quick nosh and get right back on the slopes? Then check out the two outdoor restaurants and warm up by a fire pit while you eat. If you’re at the base of the mountain you can also refuel at the Valley Lodge or Adventure Center.
Blue Mountain is a year round facility with activities in the warmer weather months as well including hiking, disc golf, lots of festivals, outdoor dining and live music. The Summit Lodge can also be rented for weddings and parties, and meetings and events.
Well that’s about it for this episode of Lehigh Valley Visions I hope it inspires you to get outside this winter and hit the slopes. Thanks so much for watching.
