WDIY MEMBERS, PPL AND LEHIGH COUNTY PARKS TO PLANT OVER 500 TREES ALONG LEHIGH RIVER AT LEHIGH GAP
For Immediate Release – October 1, 2012
(Lehigh Valley, PA) WDIY 88.1 FM, Lehigh Valley Community Public Radio, invites its members and friends to come out on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist with the planting of over 500 trees along the Lehigh River, just south of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. The trees are being donated and planted as part of the station’s spring membership drive. During the on-air drive, the station partnered with PA DCNR, Lehigh County Parks and PPL, to offer to plant a tree for each new and renewing member of the station.
The trees will be planted along the Lehigh River, just south of Lehigh Gap. The area was once home to a paint pigment manufacturing plant, but Lehigh County Parks has wanted to reclaim this old industrial site by turning it into a forest. WDIY’s Member Tree Grove will help to achieve that goal, along with PPL’s corporate support of the project.
The tree grove will be located near the intersection of the D&L and Appalachian Trails, a popular place for outdoor recreation. “The views at the site are awesome, especially in autumn, with the colorful trees, the sparkling Lehigh River, and the rocky outcroppings for Blue Mountain. Our volunteers should be in for a lovely morning of planting.” said Rebecca Walz, Development Director for WDIY.
The joint-effort is a project of TreeVitalize, a public-private partnership committed to helping to restore tree cover, educate citizens about planting trees as an act of caring for the environment, and building capacity among local governments to understand, protect and restore their urban trees. TreeVitalize has a goal of planting one million trees across the Commonwealth in the next five years.
“We are thrilled to partner with PPL, DCNR and Lehigh County on this project.” said Rebecca Walz, WDIY Development Director. “We are extremely grateful to our members for their generosity and we look forward to meeting and working with them in planting our WDIY Tree Grove in Lehigh County.”
