The Avett Brothers to Close Out Musikfest 2016 on Aug. 14
BETHLEHEM, PA— Chart-topping folk-rock group The Avett Brothers will send Musikfest out with a bang when they perform Aug. 14, 8 p.m., on the Sands Steel Stage. Tickets for the concert are $45-$65 and go on sale starting May 24, 10 a.m., to ArtsQuest Members and May 27, 10 a.m., to the public at www.musikfest.org and 610-332-3378.
The North Carolina-based Avett brothers have been described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the “heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of The Beatles and the raw energy of The Ramones.” A fan favorite from coast to coast, the band demonstrates it genre-crossing abilities in both its recordings and its live shows.
In 2007, The Avett Brothers released Emotionalism, which debuted at the top of the Billboard Top Heatseekers Albums chart. In support of the album, the band made its national television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, where it performed “Paranoia in B-Flat Major.” That same year, the group won the Americana Music Association’s Duo/Group of the Year and New/Emerging Artist of the Year awards.
The Avett Brothers were named “the Artist to Watch of 2009” by Rolling Stone magazine, and soon after released their album I and Love and You. In the wake of the album’s release, the group made the rounds on late-night TV, including appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
The band performed its song “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise” on the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2011, and two years later its album The Carpenter was nominated for Best Americana Album at the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards, after debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
The Avett Brothers’ new album, True Sadness, is set to be released June 24. This summer, the group is crisscrossing the country in support of the recording, performing everywhere from Mountain Jam in New York to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. The band’s 2016 concert at Musikfest marks its third appearance at the festival; it most recently performed at the Sands Steel Stage on Aug. 7, 2014.
