Join Galen Glen Winery the Weekend of October 25 & 26 and Help Them Help Others in Need.

Sep 23rd, 2014Press Release from Galen Glen Winery

Galen Glen Galen Glen winery is known for their annual programs to help local charities. In the past they have supported food banks, Toys for Tots and this harvest season desired to help Family Promise of Carbon County with a “Bare Necessities” drive. When learning more about the 501c(3) organization that serves homeless and low-income families in Carbon County and surrounding areas, Sarah Troxell, winemaker was surprised to learn that most government-funded assistance does not permit the purchase of basic needs like soap, deodorant, and toothpaste. She said, “If I didn’t know that, I’m sure there are others who also do not know.” Galen Glen’s Tasting Room Manager, Kathy Matson. has been volunteering for Family Promise by making meals and spending social time with the participants for the past two years. She states, “It’s humbling. To think one could be paying their rent and when their landlord hasn’t paid the mortgage, they become homeless. The thought of any child living in a car or on the streets just breaks my heart.”

On Saturday, October 25th and Sunday, October 26th, Galen Glen is encouraging their winery guests to participate in helping others with either monetary or product donations like soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel, shampoo, diapers, wipes and baby powder, plus laundry detergent and Clorox wipes. Because Family Promise also has classes for the participants, other needed items are notebooks, pencils, pens, tape and post-it notes. For each family who brings a donation that weekend, Galen Glen will be giving a small token gift to say “thank you.” The winery will also be offering a complimentary food and wine pairing with their warm, spiced wine to anyone over the age of 21 years.

About Family Promise:

Family Promise of Carbon County is based in Lehighton and allows homeless families to stay together. Unlike most shelters where women and children and men are separated into separate wings, this program allows families to stay and live together in the day center where they learn new skills to find better jobs and then in the evening at host churches where they have their own bedrooms. In the two years since Family Promise opened they have assisted 28 families including 37 adults, 25 children between the ages of 6-18 and 24 children under the age of 3. The average length of stay is 90 days in this sober program where all adults must submit to random drug testing. While Family Promise has helped so many, there are more in need. Director, Alicia Kline recently stated, “I’m sitting at my desk in tears. Telling moms and dads that we are full right now and have five families ahead of them on the waiting list is breaking me down.” Alicia noted that they are the only homeless program in the county for families and that she’s working with local government, writing grants and doing everything they can to increase the funds to help families get back on their feet.
