Fegley’s Brew Works Brings Home Gold and Bronze from the Great American Beer Festival
On Saturday, October 4th the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado awarded Fegley’s Brew Works a gold medal for their Arctic Alchemy and a bronze medal for their Berliner Weiss. Presented by the Brewers Association, “GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and a symbol of brewing excellence. In its 28th year, the 2014 competition surpassed all previous participation records” TheBrewersAssociation.org.
More than 5,500 commercial entries were judged from more than 1,300 breweries across the country. Fegley’s Arctic Alchemy took home the gold in the “Old Ale or Strong Ale” category with more than 30 entries and Berliner Weiss captured a bronze in the “German-Style Sour Ale” with 80 entries.
Fegley’s brewed Arctic Alchemy was inspired by a 158 year old recipe for Allsopp’s Arctic Ale by from the former Samuel Allsopp Brewery of England. The historic recipe was originally brought to Baden’s attention in 2010 when local homebrewer and beer historian Chris Bowen approached him to do a collaboration brew. The Baden and Bowen team brewed their first batch of Arctic Alchemy at Fegley’s Allentown brewery and entered it in the 2011 Great American Beer Festival where it won a bronze medal in the “Old Ale or Strong Ale” category.
The gold medal winner was brewed February, 2013 at Fegley’s Allentown Brew Works led by Brew Master Beau Baden. Aged for nearly 18 months, Fegley’s Arctic Alchemy is an old style, strong ale full of flavor, bready malt, molasses and vanilla. An old ale reminiscent of an English barleywine, it was brewed with East Kent Golding and Fuggle hops. English Pale, Caramel, Amber and Chocolate malts lend to the higher alcohol volume of 12%.
In 2006, the first beer entered by Fegley’s was their Berliner Weiss earning them their first bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. At the 2014 festival, a second bronze medal was earned for the unfiltered, sour wheat beer. A traditional German brew, Fegley’s Berliner Weiss was aged nearly a year to develop the slightly tart flavor. Pale blonde, citrus, and a champagne-like finish make for a refreshing beer at 3% alcohol by volume.
