eS’ Game of S.K.A.T.E. Event & ‘Heroes of Dirt’ Screening Added to Monster BMX Exhibition July 11 at SteelStacks
BETHLEHEM, PA—A dynamic skateboarding skills competition called “Game of S.K.A.T.E.” and an advance screening of the film “Heroes of Dirt” are among the additional attractions the public can enjoy when they attend the Monster Energy BMX Team day at SteelStacks July 11.
During the Monster Energy BMX Team event, five professional BMX stuntmen will present three free shows on the Air Products Town Square at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. In between the demonstrations, Bethlehem’s Homebase610 will host a sanctioned éS “Game of S.K.A.T.E.” competition.
Presented internationally by skateboard footwear brand éS, Game of S.K.A.T.E. is similar to the game of H.O.R.S.E. played by basketball players. During the competition, one skater sets the trick, then the other skater must duplicate it. If they miss or can’t complete the trick, they get a letter. If they land it, then the lead skater must set a new trick. The skater who spells out S.K.A.T.E. by missing tricks is the loser.
The July 11 event marks the second time Homebase610 has presented an éS Game of S.K.A.T.E. In September 2014, they hosted an event at the Allentown Arts Fest that attracted more than 40 skate shops from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
“The first Game of S.K.A.T.E. event featured some of the region’s best skateboarders and we feel we’ll have a similar level of participation during the Monster Energy BMX exhibition in July,” says Andy Po, owner of Homebase610. “We’re very excited to bring this international skateboarding game to our backyard of Bethlehem.”
Judges for the 32-person competition include éS pro skater Walker Ryan from St. Helena, Calif. The winning skater will receive a year supply of shoes from éS and prizes from Homebase610.
The Game of S.K.A.T.E. is primarily an invitational event; however, there will be limited opportunities for the public to register on a first come, first served basis on the day of the event. Homebase610 is located at 14 W. Fourth St., Bethlehem; to learn more about the competition or inquire about registering visit homebase610.com or call 610-866-0540.
Adding to the X Games like atmosphere July 11 is an advance screening of “Heroes of Dirt” at 12:45 p.m. in the ArtsQuest Center cinemas. The film, which was recently shown at the X Games, is an inspiring story about a BMX dirt rider who aspires to become the next stunt champion and is forced to mentor a troubled teen.
BMX dirt jumper Phin Cooper, played by BMX rider Joel Moody, reluctantly mentors one of the toughest boys, Blue Espinosa (Will Martinez, a Lehigh Valley native who graduated from Emmaus High School), as part of his community service hours after landing in jail for unpaid citations. As Phin leads the troubled teen on exciting adventures of riding dirt trails, big jumps and cityscapes, Blue becomes more than an obligation – he’s also an unlikely friend whose secret world of drug trafficking threatens Phin’s ultimate dream.
Heroes of Dirt, which features some of the best stunts in dirt jumping by legendary pros and hardcore locals, was filmed at several Lehigh Valley locations including Allentown, Catasauqua and Bethlehem, including Musikfest. The film was created by the husband-and-wife team of Eric (director and writer) and Jill Bugbee (producer and co-writer). The movie will make its official theatrical release Sept. 4. Tickets for the advance screening at the ArtsQuest Center are $10, or $8 for students and seniors, and on sale now at steelstacks.org.
The Monster Energy BMX demonstrations are made possible thanks to Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley and Monster Energy drinks. A hit wherever they exhibit, Monster Energy BMX has taken part in demonstrations and competitions around the globe including X Games Austin 2015, Lost in Athens, Baltic Games Indoor Edition, The Night Harvest, Masters of Dirt 2015 and more.
