Colony Meadery Comes Up Big at Mazer Cup
Allentown’s Colony Meadery Wins Five Medals at Nation’s Largest Mead Competition
In their first year competing on their industry’s biggest stage, The Colony Meadery took home five medals, becoming one of only three meaderies to garner that many.
The Allentown meadery took home medals for:
- Pikwant Field strawberry-kiwi mead – Bronze in dry melomel (fruit/vegetable mead)
- Frozen Digits blueberry mead – Bronze in semi-sweet melomel
- A Good Sarsaparilla – Silver in semi-sweet session mead
- Beso Exotico – Silver in semi-sweet dessert mead
- Mo-Me-Doh – Gold in open category semi-sweet mead
“We knew we were making a top-notch beverage,” says Mike Manning, Cofounder and Mead Maker of The Colony Meadery. “But Mazer Cup is the highest competition in our industry, and we’re incredibly honored to see that our peers agree we belong among the best in the world.”
Combined with impressive showings in the New Hampshire-based Mead Free or Die competition (5 medals) and the Michigan Mead Cup (3 medals), this brings the Colony Meadery’s total to 13 medals in national mead competitions in their first year of competition.
Mazer Cup was also the occasion for the annual meeting of the American Mead Makers Association, whose 2nd annual Industry Report revealed a 128% in mead production in 2014. In Pennsylvania alone, the number of meaderies has gone from 2 in 2013 to six today.
“It was an incredible experience to be out in Colorado among other leaders of our industry,” said Greg Heller-LaBelle, Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of The Colony Meadery. “It’s clear mead is in the early stages of a major boom, and we’re extremely excited to be playing a big part in the beverage’s rise.”
Since its launch, The Colony Meadery has steadily expanded its presence within eastern Pennsylvania at restaurants like, Fegley’s Brew Works, Taps Tavern, Strange Brew Tavern, and Hulmeville Inn. Additionally, they are distributing mead to New Jersey with Hunterdon Brewing.
