Broadway Comedy “God of Carnage” opens Lehigh Department of Theatre 2015-2016 Season
Lehigh University’s Department of Theatre kicks off its 2015-2016 season with 2009 Tony-Award winning play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. Directed by Kashi Johnson, performances are in Diamond Theater on October 2, 3, 7-9 at 7:30 pm; with a 2 pm performance on Sunday, October 4. Tickets are $12 ($5 students). New this year, the Lehigh Department of Theatre is offering pay what you wish Wednesdays for all plays.
A quick synopsis about the play: A playground altercation between two eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, and the night becomes a side-splitting free for all.
Director Kashi Johnson is an Associate Professor of Theater at Lehigh University where she teaches courses in performance, Hip Hop theater and directs in the production season. Professor Johnson has written several plays, acted, directed and produced extensively for the stage. She conceived several devised plays including gener8-tion Txt, Speaking Freely and Untold Truths. She has given talks for TEDx and BlackademicsTV on her innovative, cutting-edge Hip Hop theater course: ‘Act Like You Know.’ Select directing credits include Our Lady of 121st Street, The Crucible, The Piano Lesson, The Colored Museum and The Little Foxes among others. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and is a member of Actor’s Equity Association.
Yazmina Reza (Playwright) is a French playwright and novelist, based in Paris, whose works have all been multi-award-winning, critical and popular international successes, produced worldwide and translated into 35 languages. She has written seven plays (Conversations After A Burial, The Passage Of Winter, “Art,” The Unexpected Man, Life X 3, A Spanish Play, God Of Carnage, How You Talk The Game) and 6 novels (“Hammerklavier,” “Une Desolation (Desolation),” “Adam Haberberg,” “Dans la Luge d’Arthur Schopenhauer,” “Nulle Part” and “L’Aube, le Soir ou la Nuit (Dawn Dusk or Night)”). Films include: “Le Pique-Nique de Lulu Kreutz,” directed by Didier Martiny and “Chicas,” written and directed by the author.
God of Carnage features Lehigh University students Hallie Bodenstab, Nicholas Comas, Paige Hapeman and Zoellner Arts Center staff member Matthew Faragasso. The design team includes Katherine Coots set and props designer, Pamela Richey costume designer, Andrew Nelson sound designer, with Sue Ragusa as lighting designer. Andrew Southard is the technical director and Lehigh student Katie Pettis is the stage manager.
