Bethlehem Steel FC To Host Doubleheader On May 15

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (May 4, 2016) – Bethlehem Steel FC will host a soccer doubleheader on May 15 when Lehigh Valley United and Reading United AC play ahead of the Bethlehem Steel FC and FC Montreal game at Goodman Stadium, the club announced Wednesday. Lehigh Valley and Reading will play at 12 p.m., followed by Bethlehem and FC Montreal at 4 p.m. 

“Collaborating with Reading United and Lehigh Valley United is the perfect opportunity to bring more soccer to Goodman Stadium and we look forward to seeing our dedicated fans at both games,” Bethlehem Steel FC Managing Director Rich Searls said.

“We are extremely excited to play our home opener against Reading United at Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium,” Lehigh Valley United General Manager of PDL Operations Padraic Farrell said. “We are thankful for Bethlehem Steel FC, Philadelphia Union and Lehigh University in helping make this doubleheader possible.”

Tickets for both matches are available through Lehigh Valley United and Bethlehem Steel FC with one ticket granting access to both games.

“We are very fortunate to be able to support the Union player development structure by allowing the Lehigh Valley United and Reading players the opportunity to be seen by Philadelphia Union and Bethlehem Steel coaching staffs,” Reading United AC President and General Manager Arthur Auchenbach III said.  “Being part of a PDL/USL doubleheader will be great for fans of Steel FC and Reading United as they likely will watch a few of the players that will feature in future Bethlehem Steel FC or Philadelphia Union teams. 

Current Bethlehem Steel FC and Philadelphia Union goalkeeper John McCarthy played for Reading United AC and Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke served as the head coach for Reading United AC from 2008-13. Philadelphia Union players C.J. Sapong, Raymon Gaddis, Leo Fernandes and Keegan Rosenberry also spent time with Reading United AC during their professional development. Bethlehem Steel FC will take on Reading United AC later this season on Sunday, June 12 as part of the Philadelphia Union Festival in Reading.

Bethlehem Steel FC return to action on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. on the road against Orlando City B. The game will be televised on the USL official YouTube channel.



Bethlehem Steel FC joined the United Soccer League officially on Oct. 27, 2015 and will begin its inaugural season in 2016. Based in Bethlehem, Pa. in the Lehigh Valley, it is the official USL affiliate of the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. Also owned and operated by Keystone Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the team started their inaugural season on March 25, 2016 at FC Montreal and played the home opener at Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium on April 3, 2016.
