16th Annual Schadt String Competition for Violin

 Winners announced for violin competition

First Prize Awarded $8,000 up from previous years

For Immediate Release — Sunday, March 4, 2012

ALLENTOWN, PA—WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT 16TH ANNUAL SCHADT STRING COMPETITION—The violin was featured this year at the annual Schadt String Competition.  This year three finalists performed at a free public recital at Symphony Hall in Allentown. First place and also winner of the “Audience Choice Award” of $100 went to Ji Won Song who is from South Korea.  Ji Won is a student at Curtis Institute. She performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35.

The first place award is $8,000, which is an increase of $3,000 from last year and a solo performance with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra 2012-2013 subscription season. The second-place prize of $2,500 went to Siwoo Kim, a fourth-year undergraduate student at Juilliard, where he studies with Donald Weilerstein and Ronald Copes and formerly, with Robert Mann. He performed Brahms Concerto in D Major, Op. 77.

The third place of $1,500 went to Pennsylvania native, Clara Lyon, who is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook, studying under the tutelage of Soovin Kim.

The distinguished panel of judges included Nicholas Mann, currently co-chair, Manhattan School of Music string department, where he teaches both violin and chamber music. He has been a member of the faculty at the Juilliard School since 2002; Charles Castleman, who earned degrees from Harvard, Curtis, and University of Pennsylvania, has been the professor of Violin at Eastman School of Music since 1975; and, lastly, but not least Diane Wittry, Allentown Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor.
