The Hunting Ground
PG-13 – 103 min
Starring: Andrea Pino, Annie Clark, Claire Potter
Directed by: Kirby Dick
Through an empowering look at the safety of our college campus’ comes a message of hope and the possibility for change.
In this powerful documentary, filmmaking team writer-director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering provide a startling exposé of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups and their devastating toll on students and their families. Through verité footage and first-person testimonies, the film covers the lives of several undergraduate assault survivors as they attempt to pursue their education and justice as they fight to establish the Title IX complaint as a resource for victims of sexual assault everywhere. Despite institutional resistance, harassment, and traumatic aftermath, a tale of hope and institutional change rises from these campuses as the filmmakers inspire their viewers to take action against the silent horror of sexual assault.
This is not the first time that Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering have collaborated to alter the perspective of sexual assault; their first documentary The Invisible War (2012), which focused on the prevalence of rape within the US Military, which garnered Dick an Academy Award nomination. The Hunting Ground has received honors such as the Stanley Kramer Award from the Producer’s Guild of America, Best Documentary from the Utah Film Critics, and finally the Oscar nomination for Best Song (Lady Gaga, “Til It Happens to You,’), which Gaga sang during a moving Oscar performance alongside survivors of sexual assault.
