Love and sports– can the stakes get any higher?

It’s 1981 in Los Angeles. And our neighborhood of choice belongs to 11-year-old Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) and his basketball buddies. That is, until Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) moves in next door to Quincy with her number one dream of being the first female shooter in the NBA. But Quincy also wants to play in the NBA, just like his dad. And so, the two develop a love-hate relationship that lasts into high school, with Monica’s edge and Quincy’s top-dog attitude separating them, but melting as soon as one of them needs a supportive shoulder. As high school ends, their relationship blossoms into romance, but it’s only one short year later, with both of them playing ball at USC, that Quincy’s quickly-deteriorating relationship with his father leads to his break up with Monica. Their paths diverge, only to meet up again years later, their pro careers established, and the big game—and years of love and competition– in front of them.

From the producing hands of Spike Lee, Love and Basketball bounced into the scene as the first feature film for writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose previous credits included writing for television shows such as Felicity, South Central and Sweet Justice. Her career in television finally brought her to the director’s chair, where she paired her athletic background (she had run track while attending film school at UCLA) with her directing abilities to create a film that focused both on the sport of love and love of the sport. The film was honored with the 2001 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, Best First Feature, and Best Female Lead (Sanna Lathan), as well as the Humanitas Prize at Sundance.
