Bangor

The Heritage Center occupies the former 1907 Bangor Town Hall in the heart of the Slate Belt. Located in the northern tier of the Lehigh Valley, a short and scenic drive from Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, SBHC is the hub where visitors of all ages enjoy the region’s rich heritage.

Displays feature the people who settled this part of America, from the Lenape to the waves of immigrants – the Scots-Irish, German, Cornish, Welsh, Italian, Jewish, and others – whose families live here today.

Discover the similarities and differences in the immigrant experience. Explore the slate industry that produced the country’s blackboards and roofing shingles. See how slate quarries and textile factories changed rural life. Unearth the unique traditions, celebrations, food and folkways that Slate Belt people contribute to American life.

Enjoy the one-of-a-kind Homefront Magazine that Slate Belt volunteers created for local servicemen and women during WWII.

SBHC produces changing exhibits, monthly programs and seasonal events. Visitors delve into local history/genealogy at our research center with its unique oral history interviews and DVDs of past programs. SBHC publishes an ethnic book series and creates tours and maps of the region. Groups may reserve a “Night at the Center.” Check the website for up-to-date program information.

The Heritage Center is open to the public Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 3 pm, April through October, and Sundays, 12 to 3 pm, November through March. Closed on holidays. Admission is FREE. Private tours are available upon request.
