No. 9 Mine & Museum

Visit one of the largest coal mine museums when you come to Lehigh Valley, full of pictures, artifacts, tools and equipment. Tour a real mine that was driven in 1855 and was the oldest, longest operating Anthracite coal mine in the United Stated by the time it closed in 1972.

Ride 1600 feet into the mountain and visit a real mine shaft with the cages (elevators) still in position from when it last operated. See a real mule way or hospital room carved from solid rock, and a man way driven straight up 60 feet to the “Monkey,” airway. It was driven in 1858 and is the oldest around. It’s not only a tour … It’s an experience.
